Hyderabad: As protest steps up over the suicide of Dalit researcher Rohith Vemula, his mother has been hospitalised in Hyderabad after she complained of chest pain.
Radhika (Rohith's mother) was shifted from the protest camp on the campus on Sunday night and taken to a private hospital after she complained of "chest pain...heart pain" and she is in ICU, Rohith's brother Raja said.
Things are picking up pace at the Hyderabad University as Vice Chancellor P Appa Rao has taken a leave. Protesting students had been demanding his resignation. Rao has even been booked under the SC/ST act over the suicide.
In his absence, the senior-most professor at Hyderabad University will be the acting Vice Chancellor.
Vipin Srivastava said, "The seniormost professor, shall perform the duties of the Vice Chancellor. I am officiating unless Appa Rao comes back. He has gone on leave. I am trying to bridge the communication gap."
Protests are being carried out at other cities as well. In Mumbai, a group of demonstrators protesting Rohith's suicide alleged they were attacked during a rally in Dharavi.
Several students of Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi have gone on an indefinite hunger strike. The students are not happy with the Vice Chancellor just going on leave and are demanding that Appa Rao be sacked and arrested.
Rohith, one of the five research scholars suspended in 2015 in connection with an attack on a ABVP leader, had allegedly hanged himself in a hostel room on the varsity campus on January 17.
