CHENNAI: Following the submission of an interim report by the one-man inquiry commission headed by retired High Court Judge K Sampath on the Paramakudi police firing on September 11, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday announced that Rs 5 lakh would be given as assistance to the families of the six persons who killed in the police firing. Besides, government jobs will be provided to one family member of each victim on compassionate grounds and `15,000 will be given to those who suffered injuries in the incident, in addition to the `15,000 disbursed already.Since `1 lakh has been paid to the families of the victims already, the balance amount of `4 lakh would paid to the families of the victims immediately, an official release here said.The one-man enquiry commission was appointed on September 19 and was directed to submit its report within two months. On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Dalit leader Emmanuel Sekaran, political leaders were visiting his memorial at Paramakudi on Sept 11. TMMK leader John Pandian was banned from entering the area on that day considering the law and order situation. However, Pandian attempted to visit Paramakudi violating the ban and was arrested. Following this, his supporters staged a road roko and indulged in violence. When police opened fire as a defensive measure, six persons lost their lives unfortunately.
