Tamil scholars have opposed the recent announcement of the State Government to introduce English medium of teaching in government schools. At a press meet here on Thursday, members of the Thamizhaga Aringnargalin Koottamaippu (Tamil Scholars’ Forum) said that such a move would result in the English language gaining prominence over Tamil in government schools.
Coordinator of the forum Kumari Ananthan said, “After Independence, the medium of instruction in TN schools was Tamil. Along with C Subramaniam, the then Education Minister, members of opposition parties such as C N Annadurai, Neduncheziyan, P Jeevanandam, T P Meenakshi Sundaram and T M Narayanasamy Pillai jointly started a ‘development committee’ to lay stress on Tamil medium of instruction.” S Muthukumaran, former VC of Bharathidasan University, said, “There is a wrong belief among parents that an English medium of instruction would help their children get placed in a good position.”
“Scholars across the world have opined that learning through the mother tongue will help gain knowledge effectively,” Ananthan said. M Ponnavaikko, former VC, Bharathidasan University was also present.
