KOCHI: The Keralite who was shot dead by the Tamil Nadu police in Dindigul on Monday is suspected to be the key accused in the Aluva spirit case. The deceased Sinoj, 30, of Vellikkakathu Veedu, Champakkara, was involved in a case relating to seizure of 8,500 litres of spirit from a workshop in Aluva, last year. A lookout notice was issued by the Excise Department against Sinoj and five others in last October. Sinoj was part of the five-member gang that attacked a special police team during a search operation at a private lodge at Dindigul in connection with a kidnapping case. Sinoj was killed in police firing while three others were arrested and one managed to escape. The Excise Department suspects that two of the arrested Keralites, Aneesh and Varghese, were also involved in the spirit case. According to officials, Aneesh, alias Maradu Aneesh, of Anakkattil Veedu, Maradu, was accused in several other cases. He had links with spirit mafias in Tamil Nadu and had smuggled spirit from other states as well. Varghese also played a major role in the case, they said.
