KOCHI: The students and staff of Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) South Ezhippuram, are busy setting up the smart class lab - fitting A/C, tiles and setting the computers. The school that is located in a remote corner enroute to Perumbavoor is gearing up for the official inauguration of the Smart Class scheduled for January 5.The Smart Class will be inaugurated by Public Works Minister Ebrahim Kunju, said school headmaster P M Satheesh Kumar. The school was selected as one among the five Smart Schools in the state, the others being GGHSS Cotton Hill in Thiruvananthapuram, Moyans Memorial GHSS Palakkad, Government Tribal Higher Secondary School, Idukki and GHSS Karuvarakundu in Malappuram last year. The Ezhippuram school has also developed an innovative programme, the Prathibha Vision channel, and has a studio from where they telecast internal programmes of the school along with Victers Channel programme in Malayalam, English and Hindi during lunch break. All the 800-odd students of the school benefit by it. Each classroom will have a projector. Selected students are also given netbooks and laptops. Students who are good at IT and animation programmes conducted by IT@School are given laptops, handycam or digital cameras to exploit their potential. "Intel has sponsored 50 laptops and netbooks. We have 130 laptops now and all the classes will have internet connection," said Rasheed P M, school IT coordinator. Specific ICT training is being given to all teachers and student coordinators so as to impart education in a more interesting and effective way. CDs of teaching modules are shown to the students, he said "The school is IT-savvy and will be developed into a hub for nearby schools and the public. The smart class status has been given on the basis of its IT achievements such as IT awards, performance in technology side Haritha Vidyalayam Educational Reality Show and other IT activities. These schools will be developed into IT hubs for ICT-enabled education," said Anwar Sadath, Executive Director IT@School project. `25 lakh has been given this year for infrastructure development. The centre is providing 75 per cent of the funds and state 25 per cent, he said. "This is a five-year programme and ` 1.25 crore has been earmarked for the project and the recurring expenses will be met by the IT@School," said Satheesh. "A team from UNESCO visited the school and their report also helped us get the status, We have 40 members in our IT club," said Rasheed. The school which was quite backward began to register cent per cent success in SSLC from 2004 onwards. The IT@School project is being implemented in classes VIII to class X at all the government and aided schools in the state.
