Space Week celebrations begin
The theme this year is Space for Human Safety and Security

Around 1,800 students from various schools participated in the World Space Week celebrations held at Sarabhai Science Park in Kakkanad. The celebrations were inaugurated by Benny Behanan MLA on Thursday. The theme this year is ‘Space for Human Safety and Security’.

A wonderful world of space science through posters and models was thrown open to the students and teachers who accompanied them at the park.

Kochi IG K Padmakumar gave the special address. Remadevi, deputy director, VSSC, interacted with the students and threw light on the various aspects of space science. P I Muhammed Ali, chairman, Thrikkakara Municipality, presided over the function.

“A slew of programmes have been organised in this regard. Students from various schools in Ernakulam, Pala and Thodupuzha interacted with scientists. Students will be arriving from Kannur, Wayanad and other districts on Friday and Monday. Each day a senior scientist from VSSC will interact with the students. tor of the park. A 45-minute film showcasing the achievements in space science will be shown to students and a quiz contest based on it will be held. Contests in painting and elocution will also be held.

On Monday, students will get to see how rockets are being made. Balagangadar of VSSC, an expert in the field, will address the session.

The World Space Week is observed from October 4 to 10 every year. It is  considered as an international celebration of science and technology with  the aim of encouraging, educating and commemorating space exploration across the world through various programmes.

St Albert’s College: Selected students of MSc Space Science at St Albert’s  College will participate in the Space Science Week celebrations at VSSC.

“We plan to set up a state-of-the-art telescope soon. This will also be opened to public to see the extra-terrestrial bodies. “We plan to hold an exhibition on space objects,” said principal Robert Stanley.
