CHENNAI: “Look towards the future, not the past trends to make your career choices,” was a piece of wisdom from Jayaprakash A Gandhi, career consultant and analyst, to school students who gathered at the Kumararani Meena Muthiah College of Arts & Science to participate in an inter-school fest recently.Jayaprakash advised engineering aspirants to stay away from ECE (Electronics & Communications). “Stay away from ECE. Few years ago it used to be a hot favourite, but not anymore. The future belongs to Electronics, Electrical, Civil, and IT engineers,” he said. He also added that if anyone aspired to be a part of the development around, these were the streams that one should look forward to. He introduced some of the new streams to students like Earthquake Engineering, Geo-Engineering and Pile Foundation. For science students, who fail to make it to medical colleges, his advice was to go for PharmD course, which a few universities like SRM are offering. He predicted great scope for law and economics. Post recession, corporate sectors have shown concern about having an economist in their board to plan a long-term strategy that would cushion the effects of any future financial upheaval, he added.
