New Delhi: Ram Gopal Varma's new film 'Department' has been announced and the star studded casting has created the buzz as anticipated. Amitabh Bachchan, Rana Daggubati, Sanjay Dutt, Kangana Ranaut, Raveena Tandon, Nasseruddin Shah, Abhimanyu Singh and Madhu Shalini are going to be featured in 'Department'.
'Department' is said to be a story based on a group of encounter specialists of Mumbai Police, who have different perspectives towards separate underworld groups.
The film is a follow up of 2002 film 'Company', which takes the audiences to a new era, where the underworld has organised again as a proper business unit.
Amitabh Bachchan is playing the top cop, who does not want the operations against the underworld to deviate from the scheduled plan due to the differences between various police members.
Big B has already worked with Ram Gopal Varma in 'Sarkar', 'Sarkar Raj', 'Nishabd', 'Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag' and 'Rann'.
Amitabh's stint with Varma in 'Sarkar' was praised in all quarters. Big B's portrayal of Subhash Nagre in 'Sarkar' was modeled on the lines of Marlon Brando's character in 'The Godfather', but the inputs and nuances brought in by Amitabh Bachchan made it thoroughly indigenous and believable.
Definitely Amit Roy's path breaking cinematography had added weight to Amitabh's onscreen avatar, but at the same time Amitabh's gestures made the character absolutely vivid. It was the director-actor chemistry between Bachchan and Varma, which had made the confrontational scene between Subhash Nagre and Rashid, a ruthless smuggler, played by Zakir Hussain, really memorable.
Zakir Hussain was simply stunning in this scene, probably his best till date. He keeps looking into Subhash Nagre's eyes while touching his feet for blessings, who had denied Zakir the permission to smuggle via the Mumbai coasts. Amitabh does not raise his hands but looks staright into Zakir's eyes who looks away.
In the very next shot, Amitabh asks one of his aides to probe about Zakir in a completely normal manner, without showing any excitement or worry. This swift transition from high voltage emotional scene to a normal state made Amitabh authentic and brought him closer to real life characters like Subhash Nagre.
Bachchan and Varma worked together in 'Nishabd' too, which did not have much except Big B's flamboyant acting and Jia Khan's thunder thighs. Big B excelled in the last sequence, when he decides to not commit suicide and live with Jia's memories.
'Aag', Varma's worst till date, 'Rann' and 'Sarkar Raj' also featured Amitabh in prime roles, but somehow the old charm was not visible.
This time, Big B is appearing in a cameo in 'Department', however, he will need to garner his experience to counter other actors, who are extremely talented in their own ways.
Naseeruddin Shah has never worked with Varma, but we all know how capable he is. Naseeruddin Shah can certainly create magic with Varma.
Sanjay Dutt is also a part of this cop drama with Shah. Dutt has earlier worked with Varma in 'Daud', a film better known for Urmila's astonishing beauty and melodious songs. Dutt is quite familiar with the working style of Varma, and thus he can easily fetch in his own experience of playing a police cop dealing with the underworld from films like 'Dus' and 'Shootout at Lokhandwala'.
Abhimanyu Singh is another powerhouse of talent, who has earned recognition through films like 'Gulaal' and 'Rakht Charitra'. He and Rana Daggubati must be looking forward to 'Department' as this can be the life time opportunity for them.
Kangna Ranaut has so far succeeded in roles that have something to do with psychological issues, and thus it will be interesting to see how RGV handles her.
Raveena Tandon and Madhu Shalini, a well known south Indian face, are also there to burn the screen. There presence is bound to add more value to 'Department'.
Ram Gopal Varma has developed his own style over the years and 'Department' might be an expansion of that, but the presence of several big and talented actors will put extra pressure on Varma.
It's not easy for any director to use all the actors to the optimum, but if done accurately 'Department' can be an impressive film.
