Veteran leader Madhu Dandavate dead
Dandavate, a veteran Socialist parliamentarian, was known for his incisive speeches laced with wit and humour.

Mumbai: Former Union Finance Minister Madhu Dandavate died at a private hospital in Mumbai on Saturday after protracted illness. He was 81.

Dandavate was admitted to the Jaslok Hospital on October 19, family sources said.

Dandavate's son Uday was at his father's bedside when he breathed his last at around 2000 hrs IST.

Dandavate's wife Pramila, a former MP, had died on January 1, 2002.

A gentle and erudite politician-scholar, Dandavate had served as Finance Minister in the National Front government under V P Singh.

He was also the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.

He has also served as the Union Railways Minister in the Janata Party government and is credited with making the Konkan Railway a reality.

His body is kept in the Janata Dal office in the Capital on November 14.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was in Dhaka to attend the 13th SAARC summit, expressed grief over the Dandavate?s demise.

In his condolence message, the Prime Minister said that Dandavate upheld the highest values in public life.

"An outstanding parliamentarian, his participation in debates and in the activities of Parliament will be cherished. He would also be remembered for his invaluable contribution to public service in his long and distinguished political career," said Singh.

The Prime Minister conveyed his condolences to the members of his family.
