TIRUNELVELI: In the first rain-related death recorded in the district on Thursday, a 66-year-old woman was killed after the roof of her house collapsed.Sources said, Radha Krishnammal (66) of East Street, Kailasapuram was living alone. On Wednesday, her son, who was residing near Madurai, called his mother over the phone.However, even after repeated attempts, there was no response from the woman. The following day, when her son arrived at Tirunelveli to check on her, he found that the roof of the house she was staying in, had collapsed. Suspecting that his mother could be trapped in the debris, he immediately alerted the Palayamkottai Fire and Rescue Service personnel, who rushed to the spot and started clearing the debris. They then recovered Radha’s body from inside the rubble.The body was subsequently handed over to the police, who sent it to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.Palayamkottai fire station officer M Subramanian told Express that the roof of the house, an old structure, collapsed due to the incessant rains. Meanwhile, sources said that the incident could have taken place two days ago, while the woman’s neighbours acknowledged that they heard some noise on Tuesday night.
