News18 Showsha Reel Awards 2024 will be taking place on March 9. The prep for the grand night is already underway. While we recently introduced our jury members, we also announced the News18 Showsha Reel Awards 2024 nominations earlier this month. In 2023, filmmakers put their best foot forward and delivered movies that had everyone talking. We’ve picked out seven of these brilliant filmmakers and nominated them for the Best Director award. Here’s a look at who is in the running for the Best Director category.
Atlee: The Tamil director made his Hindi film debut with Jawan. The Shah Rukh Khan headlined film might be Atlee’s first Hindi film but he ensured that the language change did not come in the way of entertaining the audience. With Jawan, Atlee reminded everyone that he knows the audience’s pulse well and can deliver a larger-than-life masala film.
Siddharth Anand: Helming Shah Rukh Khan’s big comeback vehicle might not have been easy but Siddharth Anand made it seem like a cakewalk. With his directorial work in Pathaan, Siddharth Anand presented Shah Rukh in a never-before-seen avatar. He brought back the hit jodi of SRK and Deepika Padukone in the film and added John Abraham to the mix.
Karan Johar: 2023 was truly a year of comebacks! In 2023, not only did SRK return to the big screen but Karan Johar also returned to the director’s seat. He helmed Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and brought family audiences back to theatres with the film. The movie featured quintessential KJo moments that elevated the film to the next level.
Anil Sharma: Director Anil Sharma packed in the nostalgia with Gadar 2. Released 22 years after the original film hit the cinemas, Anil brought back Sunny Deol, the handpump, and audiences in trucks.
Rajkumar Hirani: After having worked with Aamir Khan and Ranbir Kapoor, Rajkumar Hirani worked his magic on the screen with Shah Rukh Khan. While the filmmaker pushed himself out of his comfort zone in terms of subject, he kept many of his trademark emotional elements intact which made Dunki a memorable watch.
Zoya Akhtar: Director Zoya Akhtar launched three star kids (Agastya Nanda, Suhana Khan, and Khushi Kapoor) and a bunch of new actors with The Archies. Zoya intertwined the old-world charm with Gen Z in The Archies, a feat that was refreshing to see on the big screen.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga: The Telugu filmmaker returned to Bollywood after four years with Animal and he roared loud with the Ranbir Kapoor starrer film. Sandeep Vanga Reddy came out with all guns blazing with Animal and blew up the box office.
