The beloved actress of Malayalam cinema Kaviyoor Ponnamma died from cancer in Kochi on September 20.

Malayalam actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma has passed away. According to reports, she had been battling cancer. The popular veteran actress breathed her last at the age of 79 at a private hospital in Kochi. Several people know her work as a singer too. One such song that she sang is the famous Ambike Jagadambike.

This devotional song was sung by B Vasantha, Kaviyoor Ponnamma and P Madhuri. Ambike Jagadambike was featured in the 1972 film Theerthayathra, directed by A Vincent. The lyrics of the song were written by P Bhaskaran while the music was composed by AT Ummer.

The actress started her career as a singer. She was first approached at the age of 12 by music director Devarajan to sing for plays. Eventually, she took up acting in the theatre and went on to become one of the leading actresses of the Kerala People’s Arts Club. The actress debuted in the film industry at the age of 14. She is known for her roles in Asuravithu, Velutha Kathrina, Cross Belt, Nellu, and others.

Ponnamma was born on September 10, 1945, and had an illustrious career that spanned over 7 decades. She has appeared in more than 700 films and is known mostly for her mother roles on screen. The late Malayalam actress also bagged the Kerala State Awards for her exceptional performances in several iconic roles.

She has also shared the silver screen with actors like Mohanlal, Mammootty and Prem Naseer. According to reports, she has played mother to Mohanlal in over 50 films. In 1962, she appeared in her first film, Sreerama Pattabhishekam. The actress is now known for her roles in numerous films like Thommante Makkal and Odayil Ninnu, among others.

She was married to the late filmmaker Mani Swami. He died in 2011 after a long illness. The beloved mother of Malayalam cinema died from cancer in Kochi on September 20. The actress is survived by her daughter Bindu and son-in-law Venkataram. As soon as the shocking news of the actress’ passing surfaced, several people paid condolences to Kaviyoor Ponnamma.
