The IPL 2024 Player retention window was closed on Sunday evening as the 10 franchises cumulatively retained 173 players for the next season of the cash-rich league. The Players’ retention will take place on December 19 in Dubai and with the franchises already retaining their core unit now they have to run their minds to find the right players who can add depth and the right balance to their unit.
Teams like Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore made some bold moves by releasing a big chunk of their overseas players.
Five-time champions Mumbai released the likes of Jofra Archer, Tristan Stubbs, Duan Jansen and Jhye Richardson. Releasing Archer was a big move as Mumbai backed him for two straight seasons despite his injury woes. Archer made just five appearances across two seasons due to injuries.
RCB have opened up space for recreating their bowling attack by letting go of Hazlewood, Harshal, and Hasaranga, as well as David Willey and Michael Bracewell. They now have a purse of INR 40.75 crores for four overseas spots and three domestic spots, while Mumbai have a purse of INR 15.2 crores ahead of IPL auction happening on December 19 in Dubai.
Chennai Super Kings released Ben Stokes who made himself unavailable for the next season to manage his workload and fitness.
Meanwhile, KKR parted ways with the likes of Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav and Shakib Al Hasan to boos their salary cap in the auction.
LSG and GT didn’t release any big players and retained the majority of their side who has done well for them in their first two seasons.
Delhi Capitals released the likes of Mustafizur Rahman, Rilee Rossouw, Manish Pandey and Phill Salt as they will look to revamp their side in the auction.
Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad didn’t release too many players despite their dismal show last season, however, the latter let go of Harry Brook.
