As the country gears up to witness the Bihar Assembly elections and crucial bypolls in several states, election symbols become an important part of the polling season with posters and pictures to advertise for the various parties. The elections symbols, which help people identify their favourite candidate or party, were first used during India’s first general elections in 1951-52, to facilitate voting by a largely illiterate population of the country.
While the three-phased assembly elections in Bihar will be held on October 28, November 3 and November 7, bypolls to one Lok Sabha and 56 assembly seats across 12 states are scheduled for November 3 and 7.
News18 brings to you a series of graphics on the story behind the emergence and allotment of elections symbols.
