A day after the sanitation workers in east Delhi called off their 10-day strike over salary dues, the national capital continued to witness 'garbage' politics with both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as well as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking to streets to clean up the filth.
While senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, including Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Ashutosh and Alka Lamba, on Saturday morning took to streets on a cleanliness drive, the BJP announced that it would clear all the garbage from the national capital within 48 hours.
Launching the cleanliness drive, the Aam Aadmi Party said that though they could not do the task daily, but could "at least stand by MCD workers".
Meanwhile, the BJP termed AAP's cleanliness drive as "a political stunt". Pointing that the AAP government released funds only after the Delhi High Court's intervention, BJP leader Sambit Patra questioned why the party launched its cleanliness drive only after the strike got over.
Speaking to mediapersons, AAP leader Ashutosh used the opportunity to once again hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which rules the MCD. "BJP is doing politics, and corruption is rampant in MCD," said Ashutosh, alleging that the party had made the civic body bankrupt.
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia reached out to the sanitation workers, who called off their strike on Friday, saying the government wants to give out a message that they need not worry, adding that the "AAP government was even giving them their salaries when the BJP failed to do it".
Following the end of strike by the sanitation workers, they were slated to resume work at 7 am on Saturday. However, the delay in the workers getting back to work turned out to be an opportunity for the Aam Aadmi Party, which started a cleaning drive early morning.
The opportunity was also used by the AAP to continue its offensive against the BJP-led MCD. Party leader Alka Lamba toed the party line, calling MCD "the most corrupt organisation".
She further said, "There should be a probe, there is no shortage of funds. We will bring transparency in the system."
The activity was carried out by the ruling party primarily in areas of Patparganj, Mayur Vihar and Chandni Chowk.
On Friday, sanitation workers agreed to end their strike after the MCD declared that they would give salaries in a day or two. This came after Delhi High Court intervened and ordered the AAP government to release the salaries. Meanwhile, Delhi L-G assured MCD mayors that he would be releasing Rs 493 crore.
