DMK, NCP express concerns on fuel price hike
Sources say Congress's trusted allies, DMK and NCP, said in the meeting that fuel price hike would make winning the elections difficult.

New Delhi: There seems to be more ally trouble for the Congress after Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's exit. Sources say that the DMK asked for a diesel price hike rollback at the UPA coordination committee meeting on Thursday. Sources also say that the DMK wants the LPG cap to be increased.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar also wants the LPG cap to be increased, sources added. The UPA constituents said in the meeting that fuel price hike would make winning the elections difficult. The NCP and DMK are two of the most trusted allies of the Congress.

However, sources say that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram defended the reforms saying they were unavoidable.

The Congress insisted that its allies endorsed the reforms at the meeting. "No specific reforms were discussed. We discussed the need for reforms. We agree that the reforms are going to be a burden to people, but they are unavoidable," said Chidambaram, adding that the reforms had been welcomed by the stakeholders.

"With the new reforms, investments into India will increase. It will stimulate investments," he said.
