New Delhi: The Rajasthan government has ordered an enquiry into the phone tapping case by the Vasundhara Raje government in the state. This after Raje was accused of getting the phones of her own ministers and MLAs tapped illegally.
Those whose phone were allegedly illegally tapped included former minister Kirori Lal Meena, former BJP MLA Surendra Singh Rathore, Gujjar leaders and former BJP MLAs Prahlad Gunjal and Attar Singh Bhadhana.
Former state home minister Gulab Chand Kataria had on Tuesday admitted that he was unaware that his government had ordered any such intercepts.
According to the Indian Telegraph Act, phone calls can be tapped under special circumstances, only with written orders from the state Home Secretary.
If the Home Secretary is not available to do so, an IG rank official can issue an interim order which must then be followed by an order from the Home Secretary within three days.
But in at least seven cases a DIG rank official had issued verbal orders. The leaders whose phones were tapped are now demanding a CBI probe into the matter.
