Facial hair for a woman is generally considered unappealing according to societal norms but a 31-year-old Danish tutor from Copenhagen doesn’t give a damn about it. She has just one proposal for her potential suitors. Either accept her with facial hair or scoot. Eldina Jaganjac is tired of women being held to what she considers to be absurd beauty standards, particularly when it comes to hair removal.
In March 2020, Jaganjac gave up using the tweezers to tuck back her unibrow and the razor to shave her upper lip. She claimed that having the hair there made her equally feminine.
According to a report in Metro, Eldina stated, “I did feel like there were extremely limited options to how women were supposed to look before I let my unibrow grow out. We are expected to invest a lot more time and money in our appearance than males do to be accepted visually in society, particularly in public settings. It’s not unusual for a man to go without shaving and eyebrow plucking; nobody finds it out of the ordinary. Like a lot of women, I’ve gotten better at self-policing.”
Eldina further said that she has had men behave rudely with her due to her facial hair. She had to put up with a guy yelling at her to pluck her eyebrows and also with a man who kept staring at her “as if she had a second head”. However, all those stares and rude comments do not affect Eldina at all.
“I believe that seeing a woman act in a way that is viewed as less feminine confuses these teenagers, who then take it out on me because they begin to doubt their standards and conception of what it means to be a man. I believe that it is difficult for teenagers to understand gender roles as they are growing up. Although I’m sure some people are making disparaging remarks behind my back, I don’t care about that,” Eldina says.
