Bengaluru Woman Calls Out Swiggy For Overcharging Premium Members: 'High-Class Digital Scam'

Food delivery giants Swiggy and Zomato often find themselves under fire from angry customers. Users have even called these platforms ‘scams’ for issues related to overcharging, delivery agent behaviour and whatnot. In a most recent incident in Bengaluru, a woman took to Reddit to express her frustration with Swiggy after being overcharged despite having a premium Swiggy One membership. According to her post, she ordered the same food from the restaurant and to one address using two accounts, one with the membership and another without. Shockingly, the platform charged Rs 309 for the order placed through the Swiggy One account, while the non-member account received the food for just Rs 241.

In the post, the woman explained, “Think before buying your Swiggy one subscription. This is high class digital scam. Same order same restaurant same time same delivery location. Left: Swiggy one order (No discount coupon was available). Right: no Swiggy one (Discount coupon was available). This is so unfair to loyal customers who took up Swiggy one subscription and are paying them monthly fees.”

Reddit users had mixed reactions to the post, as some supported the woman and called it a major scam, while others offered logical explanations.

A user sharing their experience wrote, “All food delivery companies are scum. I recently ordered from Zomato and order was not delivered for 2 hours so I called them and asked to cancel. They are saying it will cause food wastage and all kinds of crap. I tell them, ‘I have people here, they need to eat, I can’t wait any longer.’ So customer support is saying, we will ban you from placing cash on delivery ever again. I tell her, ‘I will never use Zomato again,’ checkmate.”

Another wrote, “I have noticed this too. After buying Swiggy One, all coupons disappear and my expenses increased. What a waste.”

An individual wondered, “Is this restaurant discount or user-based coupon? User based coupons don’t follow the logic you are claiming in the description and align with company strategy. For example, if this was someone’s very first order, they would have gotten Rs 150 or more off.”

“I no longer order anything, they’re full of fraud, I rather go parcel myself or eat and come,” a comment read.

One more suggested, “COVID is over, just go to the restaurant and pick up your food, save money.”

The post shared on Bangalore’s subreddit page has quickly gone viral and garnered over 750 upvotes.
