Social rules apply to everyone’s life, be it human or animal. But when it comes to elephants, they are also not far from it. Even elephants are ordered to be expelled from the herd if they commit a mistake. For the last week, a male elephant has been creating havoc in Hazaribagh district’s Daru block. This elephant is sometimes seen in Ichak block, Daru block, and sometimes in some other areas.
According to reports, this is not a stray elephant but an elephant who is expelled from the group. Recently, Murari Singh, who researches wild animals, also said that an adult elephant never gets separated from the group. The elephant creating havoc in some areas of Hazaribagh right now is an adult male elephant.
Researcher Murari Singh further explains that many studies have been done on the lifestyle of elephants worldwide. But some things are common in the results of all.
According to research, the group of elephants is the most developed group that calls each other by name like humans. When an elephant in the group does not obey the rules, the leader ostracises him. Every elephant troop is led by a female elephant. The commander, who is a male elephant, is there to safeguard the group. The commander male elephant mates with the entire group’s female elephants. Often, new young elephants in the herd breach the norms and attempt to mate with the female elephant. So during that time, they are punished for breaking the rules. They are ostracised from the group.
As per reports, there is a gland between the head and ear of the elephant. When the elephant is busy, a liquid starts secreting from the gland. During this time, the elephant becomes irritable. It becomes rebellious and does not follow the rules of the group. So, the ostracised elephant becomes even more irritable and reaches human areas.
ACF of the forest department’s western forest division, AK Parmar, says that the elephant that is creating havoc in Hazaribagh is an outcast. When any animal or human is outcast from society, it becomes irritable and deadly. The same thing has happened with this elephant. He has asked the residents to keep their distance from the elephant.
He suggested if it is entering the village, one should burn red chillies so that it goes away. He also suggested villagers stay inside the house and inform the forest department about it. He has also added that this elephant is proving to be very dangerous; in such a situation, caution is the best protection.
