US Woman Issues Warning About Designer Sunglasses After Losing Eye In Minor Car Accident
Glass shards from the sunglasses she wore shredded her eye, making her partially blind and with a prosthetic.

While driving a car you must follow safety precautions. However, accidents come without warning. Sometimes even with all the necessary safety measures taken, we fail to evade a mishap. But would you believe it if someone told you that a pair of sunglasses was responsible for an individual’s partial blindness during a minor car accident? Recently a US-based woman shared her horrific story of losing an eye during a not-so-major road accident all because of an eyewear accessory she wore. In a TikTok video, she recounted her experience of her eye being “shredded” warning motorists to be careful of what they are wearing behind the wheels.

According to a report by Daily Mail, the incident occurred in 2021 when the woman got into a fender bender while driving. Recalling the tragic incident, she revealed that a man driving in front of her had abruptly slammed the brakes of his car. Not being able to “act fast enough,” her car, going at a speed of 25 miles per hour, collided with the man’s vehicle from the back. She mentioned wearing luxury designer glasses during the accident. “When that happened, my airbag came out, hit my precious designer sunglasses, and they shattered into a million pieces,” she said.

The woman added that after regaining consciousness when she looked in the rearview mirror she found out that her eyelid was “hanging over”. “My eye was gone. It deflated on impact,” she continued before adding that her optic nerve was severed and her retina was detached. The woman explained that the glass shards from the sunglasses she was wearing shredded her eye to pieces. After undergoing six surgeries to reconstruct her eye, the woman now wears a prosthetic eye.

In the TikTok video, the woman said that the life-changing incident inspired her to share her story on the platform. She also highlighted the dangers of wearing sunglasses made from nylon, plastic, and glass lenses “which means they’ll shatter right on impact”. The accident prompted her to establish her own line of sunglasses, Blue Eye which makes shatter-resistant sunglasses, reported Daily Mail. “It is crazy to think that the most expensive sunglasses can be the most dangerous,” she captioned her TikTok video.
