Long-haul flights can be exhausting, leaving passengers counting down the hours until they land. However, there is one flight that defies this norm by completing its journey in less than two minutes. Yes, you heard that right. Operated by Loganair, this exceptionally short flight connects two of Scotland’s Orkney Islands: Westray and Papa Westray.
A recent video shared by Aviation Heaven on Instagram has caught the attention of many for spotlighting this record-breaking flight. Covering a distance of just 1.7 miles or 2.7 kilometres, it holds the title for the world’s shortest commercial flight. On average, it takes around 1 minute and 14 seconds to complete, but under favourable weather conditions, passengers can arrive at their destination in just 47 seconds.
As per the video, this route is essential for the local community, helping students, doctors, workers and residents travel between the islands. It also attracts tourists who want to experience the world’s shortest commercial flight. According to the video, ticket prices for this quick trip typically range between £20 (nearly Rs 2,200) and £30 (around Rs 3,300), though local residents may benefit from reduced fares.
Despite its brief duration, the flight is still subject to delays. Weather conditions such as strong winds or fog can cause disruptions even for this short route. As for amenities, there is no in-flight meal service. A joke mentioned in the video humourously notes that if flight attendants were on board, they wouldn’t finish their welcome announcement before landing.
Since being shared online, the video has garnered significant attention, racking up over 5.4 million views so far. The comment section is brimming with hilarious takes, as users couldn’t resist poking fun at the flight’s incredibly short time.
One user playfully remarked, “If I miss I will swim and catch the flight,” while another chimed in with, “Ladies and gentlemen this is your captain,ah,nevermind!”
Someone playfully commented, “The pilot is very experienced with 10,000+ flights and about 10-15 flying hours.”
“I hope the boarding gate doesn’t close 30 mins prior to the departure time of this 1 minute flight,” another joked.
A curious user questioned, “So do we need to reach two hours before at the airport?”
Another sarcastically commented, “Hopefully there’s a meal and inflight entertainment. I mean I can’t be expected to sit with my own thoughts for that length of time.”
The flight between Westray and Papa Westray began in 1967. Operating daily except on Saturdays, it covers a distance that is roughly the same as the runway at Edinburgh Airport. As per the reports, the fastest recorded flight time on this route is an impressive 53 seconds, set by pilot Stuart Linklater, who flew this route over 12,000 times before retiring in 2013.
