Former US president Donald Trump on Friday demanded that his contender Joe Biden be drug tested ahead of the two presidential debates which will be held in the months of June and September.
Joe Biden and Donald Trump have agreed to debate each other on June 27 (on news channel CNN) and September 10 (on news channel ABC). Trump claimed that Biden’s State of the Union address in March was delivered in a state of being ‘high’. The former president said his successor was “high as a kite” when he delivered the speech.
“I just want to debate this guy, but you know – and I’m gonna demand a drug test too, by the way. I am. No, I really am. I don’t want him coming in like the State of the Union. He was high as a kite,” Trump told Republicans during a speech at a GOP dinner in the city of St. Paul, Minnesota.
“We’re going to demand a drug test,” Trump reiterated. He did not specify whether he would take one himself.
US President Joe Biden delivered a fiery state of the union speech in March and launched a scathing attack on November presidential election rival Donald Trump where he warned that his rival was bowing to Russian President Vladimir Putin, putting America’s freedom and democracy in danger.
“Not since President Lincoln and the Civil War, have freedom and democracy been under assault at home as they are today. What makes our moment rare is that freedom and democracy are under attack both at home and overseas,” Biden said.
Biden did not name his rival and instead chose to refer to him as “my predecessor, a former Republican president”.
Rep. Greg Murphy, a North Carolina Republican and member of the House of Representatives, who is also the co-chair of the GOP Doctors Caucus, alleged after the speech that Biden “must have been jacked up on something that day”.
The annual set-piece presidential speech was a unique chance for Biden to pitch his reelection message in front of his closest political allies and foes — and a national TV audience.
At just over an hour long, it was also a high-stakes test of his ability, at 81 and making history as the oldest ever US president, to think on his feet.
In 2020, he claimed that Biden’s debate performances during the Democratic primaries had been “uneven” and insisted on a drug test before their debates in the general election. However, neither candidate ended up taking a drug test before their two debates.
