Neverkusen never again. Xabi Alonso’s revival of Bayer Leverkusen all culminated in yet another major milestone last night as his side clinched their record-breaking 33rd consecutive win after a hard-fought battle against Mainz.
Alonso’s Leverkusen have now overthrown Bayern Munich to become the German club with the most consecutive wins, as they also go clear ahead of the Bavarians by 11 points in the Bundesliga table currently, en route to a hopeful first Bundesliga title.
But, the headlines lately have been rife with speculation of the Spaniard’s expected departure from BayArena to seemingly greener pastures, especially to either Liverpool or Bayern, in light of the openings in the club later this season.
But, the former Real Madrid man stands firm, and stated that he has no intentions of indulging in those rumours currently, as he has his eyes set on clinching Leverkusen their maiden Bundesliga title. “Right now it’s just speculation” the 42-year-old told DAZN after the 2-1 win against Mainz.
“My head is here. We have a lot to do. We’re in a great situation. We should enjoy it and continue to prepare, and that’s all I’m thinking about.”
With head coach Thomas Tuchel set to leave Bayern Munich by the end of the season, questions are being raised about Bayern’s future, especially on the lines of who can be expected to take over the reins.
And one unassuming name that has popped up has been that of none other than the Bavarians’ current rival, Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso.

Since their disgraceful 1-3 loss to Bayer Leverkusen, the Bavarians have slumped to a frustrating low, as they incurred a 1-0 loss to Lazio in the Champions League and followed it up with the most embarrassing one of all, a 3-2 defeat to 11th place Bochum in the Bundesliga.
From battling relegation ton battling the Bavarians for the title, Alonso has been at the driver’s seat for Leverkusen this season, orchestrating a team that has looked unstoppable so far.
But, the fact of the matter is that Alonso is yet to sign an extension with Leverkusen, enticing clubs galore to take their chances at wooing the Spaniard.
