Guwahati: Violence continued in strife-torn Assam on Sunday as suspected ULFA militants triggered two blasts in different places in lower Assam's Bongaigaon and Barpeta districts. At least one person was killed an many others were injured in the twin blasts.
At least three people were injured in a powerful explosion on Sunday near a railway station in Assam, officials said. Police said the blast took place near the parking lot of the main railway station in New Bongaigaon, about 210 km west of Guwahati.
"Three people were wounded. Casualties would have been much higher had the bomb exploded a few metres away," a police official said. The injured have been shifted to a nearby hospital.
The other explosion occurred at Bohri in Barpeta district. At least one person is reported killed and many others injured in the blast. More details are still awaited.
The latest in a series of bombings and shootouts have killed nearly 80 people in the last fortnight. On Saturday, two explosions and a shootout left three people dead and 15 injured in eastern Assam.
Authorities have blamed the latest attacks on the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).
An ULFA commander told local newspapers that they would target government officials if New Delhi did not stop the military crackdown against the outfit that began on January 8.
There were two more explosions in Guwahati earlier this week that killed four people and wounded about 30. The fresh attacks come soon after a warning from the ULFA to migrant workers to quit the region.
