New Delhi: Angel Cabrera held off two of the best players in the world with a final round 69 to capture the 2007 US Open golf crown at the Oakmont Country Club on Sunday and give Argentina their first major championship in 40 years.

With no player in the field under par after three days, the final round of the 107th US Open got underway at the challenging Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.

Tiger Woods made up the two strokes he was behind early in the round, but an awful line drive at the third put him two strokes behind again at six-over.

Cabrera, meanwhile, kept his cool and his second shot on the 15th hole got him a birdie and all of a sudden he had opened up a three-stroke lead over Woods and Jim Furyk.

Woods, though, hit a stunning tee shot at the 13th hole, but could manage only a par.

Finishing up first, Cabrera tried hard for a birdie on the 18th hole, but was relieved to finish on one-under at the end of the round.

But Furyk's long birdie attempt for a share of the lead at the 18th hole wasn't even close. He carded a level-par 70 in the final round to finish at six-over.

Woods, who won two of the last three editions of the US Open, had a chance to force a playoff with a long birdie attempt on the last hole, but missed to finish at six-over, tied in second place with Furyk.

"Angel (Cabrera) played a beautiful roud of golf today, I mean, I saw some of the highlights, saw some of the shots he hit in there that he spun. Out of the first cut, holding the ball there on 15, not an easy shot, but he did it. He hit a great shot, I believe it was on eleven. He hit some great golf shots and it's what you have to do. He went out there and put all the pressure on Jim and I and you know, we fell one shot short," Woods said at the end of the championship.

"It is very difficult to describe this moment. Probably when I wake up tomorrow morning with this trophy beside me in my bed, I will realise that I have won the US Open," Angel Cabrera said after winning his first and perhaps most cherished golfing tournaments.

With this win, Cabrera has become the first Argentinean player to win the US Open.

And for Woods, more than the fact that he finished second best, it's the fact that he couldn't score a birdie for the second straight major, is what will continue to haunt him, atleast till the Open Championship.
