CHENNAI: This time around, the period of pre-board and post-board results was a stress-free one, thanks to the introduction of the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) in Class 10 CBSE schools, for the first time this year. While 89,543 students appeared for the board exams, 47,269 students gave the school-based exams and 1,257 students appeared as private candidates for board exams from 1,961 schools in the Chennai region. While there were parents who had let their children opt for the new school-based exam system, there were others who stuck to the board-based exams. On Tuesday, when the results of the exams were declared, parents and students from both the groups rejoiced, as the overall grading point system did not seem to disappoint any.Said M Rajeshwari, mother of M Vaishali, a student of SBOA, Anna Nagar, who had scored 8.8 grade points, “She has scored higher than what we expected. While this new system is welcome, parents are still unclear about it. She went in for the board-based exam, so that she could change to a matriculation school for Class 11. But we are not sure if the other matriculation school heads will accept it.” She added, “The report card looks confusing and it will take some time for the new system to settle in. While the average and above average students will be happy about the results, I am not sure about the top scorers, as they will be judged on the same scale as those who scored below them.” According to Kundavi Verma, a CBSE school teacher, the students this time, were less anxious about the results, as compared to last year. “The new grading point system gives the student a better chance to learn. It leaves better scope for the overall development of the child. He/ she is assessed not just for the academic performance but also for the overall development and life skills,” she said.Explains PC Selvarani, principal, SBOA School, “This is a totally stress-free system for not just the parents and school students, but also the teachers.Though they have to do exhaustive work, it is worth the effort, as this system is devoid of any unhealthy competition.”
