MADURAI: The BJP here on Saturday named S Murugan, a Chennai-based advocate, as the party candidate for the Sankarankoil by-election. Speaking to reporters, BJP state president Pon Radhakrishnan said that as many as nine party functionaries sought ticket from the party to contest the by-election. After scrutinising their applications and holding one-to-one interviews, the party decided to field Murugan as its candidate, he added. Murugan, who is the president of the minorities wing of the party, is a native of Kovanur in Namakkal district. His wife Kaliarasi is a doctor and the couple has two children. Radakrishnan said that the situation was favourable to the BJP as people were unhappy with both Dravidian parties, the ruling AIADMK and the DMK.
