COIMBATORE: While call taxi operators are battling a shortage of drivers, the demand for ‘call drivers’ or ‘acting drivers’ has gone up in recent times in Coimbatore. A majority of the private car owners are going in for call drivers instead of appointing a full time driver as the former option works out cheaper. While engaging a full-time driver would entail a monthly expenditure of Rs 8,000 upwards in addition to the daily allowance, using the services of an acting driver would mean spending just around Rs 500 for five hours or so. Car owners usually engage an acting driver for long distance journeys. “At several homes, you can see the cars being taken out only during weekends for a family outing. The rest of the days the vehicle is simply parked. In such cases, there is no point in appointing full time drivers and paying them a monthly salary. We help such owners by supplying acting drivers,” says A Venkatesh of SVS Call Drivers, a city-based agency. Seeing huge potential in this business, the Fast Track Call Taxi has set up a separate company ‘Top 4 Call Drivers’ for providing call drivers to customers. “The demand for call drivers is increasing daily. We have over a thousand drivers working in our company. That shows the potential in this market,” says C Ambigapathy, managing director of the company.
