New Delhi: To deal with sky-rocketing price of onion, the Delhi government has launched a new initiative. The government will sell onion at Rs 50 per kg at 1,000 places across the city from Saturday.

To ensure that onions are available to the general public, the state government will deploy 150 mobile vans.

Even as onions price keeps on rising, the Sheila Dikshit government is losing its sleep as Assembly elections are scheduled in a few months. To ensure that onion price does not become an election issue, the Sheila Dikshit government is going all out to sell them at subsidised rates.

Apart from the 150 mobile vans, onion will be sold through 400 other outlets including 280 Mother Dairy shops. According to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit the government will sell onion on a no profit no loss basis.

In 1998 it was similar situation when rising onion price led to the rout of the then BJP government in Delhi Assembly polls.

Now onion is being sold at Rs 80 per kg in Delhi. Just a couple of months back, it was priced at Rs 20 per kg.

In Jharkhand's Hazaribagh senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha distributed onions to the people as a gift.
