An Indian Navy sailor has been arrested on charges of the murder of his wife. He has been accused of beating her brutally to death.

Mumbai: An Indian Navy sailor on Friday was arrested on charges of the murder of his wife.

Sampat Rai, 33 was an alcoholic and had accused his wife, Vandana of having an affair.

Vandana who had been hospitalised two weeks earlier after having been brutally beaten by her husband, succumbed to injuries on Thursday morning.

"My daughter always told me not to tell anybody about the beatings. If we had reported it to the Navy then this would not have happened," said Markhandey Rai, father of the 28-year-old victim.

Meanwhile, officials of the Indian Navy say that they could have intervened in the matter, had it been reported earlier.

Chief Public Relations Officer, Western Naval Command, Captain Abhay Lambhate said, "The Navy will provide complete assistance in the matter. It's purely a case of marital discord, of which we were unaware about."

R R Naik, Senior Police Inspector, Cuffe parade police station said, "He suspected her of having an extra-marital affair but did not name anyone during the interrogations."

The incident brings into focus the need for victims of domestic violence to take a stand and report any form of abuse.
