BHUBANESWAR: The House Committee, headed by Speaker Pradip Amat, has recommended to the State Government not to go ahead with Sindol hydro power project as it does not enjoy popular support and will submerge large areas in some western Odisha districts. Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Niranjan Pujari, a member of the committee, tabled the committee report in the House on Saturday. The other members of the committee were Health and Family Welfare Minister Prasanna Acharya, former minister Padmanabha Behera and Bhagaban Kanhar. Sources said all the members were unanimous that the project should be scrapped. The House Committee was formed after Opposition, Congress and BJP, strongly protested the Rs 2,600-crore project, under which three barrages are planned in Sambalpur, Sonepur and Boudh districts, on the floor of the Assembly and outside. The Congress and the BJP had boycotted the committee meetings too.
