New Delhi: The Railways' 'turnaround' man Lalu Prasad got a pat on his back from the Chairman of the global giant General Electric (GE), Jeffrey R Immelt.
"This is music to my ears that Rail Bhawan is now talking about unit costs, volume increment and competition. We did the same thing in 1980s to save the US Railways," Immelt said in an interaction with Prasad at Rail Bhawan on Wednesday.
Immelt told the Railway Minister that he was impressed with the Railways turnaround and wanted to know how it was achieved in such a limited time.
"He was much excited to know about the Railways turnaround - about budget initiatives, dedicated freight corridors, permission to private companies to run container train services, public-private partnership in construction of multi-model logistic parks, inland container depot, rail side warehouse, wagon on leasing and other initiatives," ministry sources said.
Lalu had apprised in detail to Immelt about all these initiatives and also the state of the art signaling and telecommunication system being used in the Indian Railways.
Immelt said he had been visiting India for some years but had visited the Rail Bhawan for the first time.
However, the ministry sources said that it was an "exploratory" meeting and no business was discussed.
