New Delhi: Filmmaker David Dhawan's younger son Varun Dhawan, who is all set to make his acting debut in Karan Johar's upcoming release 'Student Of The Year', says his father never put in a word for him.
The film is a romantic comedy film and also marks the debut of producer-director Mahesh Bhatt's daughter Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra.
"My father didn't even discuss with either me or my brother Rohit about making us an actor or director respectively. You look at his record, he has made 40 films and still hasn't launched a single newcomer," Varun told PTI.
"That is the way he has always worked and this is the reason why from day one I knew that if I had to enter the film industry or any other line, I would have to make my own path," he added.
The same held true for Varun's older brother Rohit Dhawan, who had gone ahead and put together his directorial debut 'Desi Boyz' entirely on his own and made a film that was different from the one institutionalised by their father.
"The credit it to my parents who have always brought these values into us. They come from this school of thought that whatever their children do, it has to be on the basis of 'do it on your own' so that they learn how to deal with adversities," Varun said.
The newcomer also said that that he is in a very good position as Johar's 'Student Of The Year' is taking him all over the world and ensuring that the world knows him even before the film hits the screens.
"I never even thought about bagging the film. My brother Rohit did make me think about it. Also, being a director, he knows the kind of performance Karan wants from his actors and how they need to be up to the mark," Varun said.
"An actor has to get the homework right while performance has to be of very superior standard as well," he added.
'Student Of The Year' also features Sana Saeed, Rishi Kapoor and Ronit Roy in supporting roles and will hit screens on October 19.
