London: Madonna is back. And the Queen of Pop is back to her roots,

launching her new album Confessions on a Dance Floor at the London club

where she gave her first live UK performance 22 years ago.

The pop icon performed a set of five songs at the Koko Club, formerly the Camden Palace on Tuesday.

The small audience of 1500 fans who had done their utmost to win tickets through various competitions saw their idol finish the exclusive performance with Everybody a song she performed on the same stage at the start of her career.

For the rare treat, fans had travelled from far, slept outside and braved the winter weather.

"I'm a big Madonna fan and I spent the night on a pavement while the rain was pouring on us to get my place," Marzin, a Polish fan, said.

"She changes her image every time, she is enduring, she actually knows that her fans expect to be challenged," Justin, an old fan said.

With Tuesday's performance, Madonna returned to her roots in more ways than one. The new album takes her back to what she first made her mark with, eighties disco.

And the style couldn't be further away from that of her last album, American Life, and its more serious, political tone.

What is certain, is that the Queen of Reinvention is hoping the sales of the new album will top those of American Life. Madonna has sold over 160 million albums, but American Life only sold an estimated two million.

Things are looking up, however. Madonna's first single from the new album Hung Up shot right to number one on the UK music charts.

The next few weeks will tell how the music-buying public will receive the album, but the hype over the star has certainly confirmed her status as the number one pop icon.
