A massive avalanche hit central Kashmir’s Sonmarg on Friday, creating panic among travellers. However, no casualties have been reported so far.
According to reports, the road connecting Kashmir to Ladakh has been blocked.
Though a few vehicles reportedly got covered by snow, no loss of life has been
reported.
According to the Met Office, the avalanche was a result of active western disturbances.
Dr Naresh Kumar, a senior scientist at India Meteorological Department (IMD) told news agency ANI, “Presently there are active western disturbances which are likely to influence North-Western India today. Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal may experience heavy rainfall today and adjoining plains will experience light to moderate rainfall and there might be very light rainfall in Delhi-NCR for two days.”
“At present, in North India, the temperature is 4-5 degrees above normal but it’ll fall gradually but continue to remain above 35 degrees…In our long-term predictions, temperature will remain above normal,” he added.
