BANGALORE:  Nobel Laureate Prof Peter C Doherty,  delivered a lecture ‘Science Protects Humanity: Adventures in Infection and Immunity’ as part of the AstraZeneca Noble Medicine initiative at the IISc on Monday. Recipient of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of how the immune system recognises virus-infected cells, Prof Doherty spoke to students about how medical science had transformed over the years. “Medical science has almost become unrecognisable from when I started.  Scientific community must interact with various fields of science and not get lost in the diversification and specialisation. Today immunity is a key aspect and vaccination has come a long way in enhancing it,” he said.Focussing on research, he added, “Bangalore is a thriving hub of research in both educational and commercial sectors. There are some problems facing infectious disease research, how science-based solutions could inform social policy, and what the future might hold for therapeutics and vaccines. It will be crucial to discuss this at this juncture.”
