Konkan Railway illegally deducted Rs 4,000 from Sreedharan's salary.

New Delhi: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Managing Director E Sreedharan, the man who revolutionised the way Delhites travelled, was made to run from pillar to post to reclaim illegal deduction from his salary.

The deduction was made from his salary as the Chairman of the Konkan Railway from where he retired in 1997.

Delhi High Court finally put a stop to it on Tuesday.

After retiring from Indian Railways in 1990, Sreedharan joined the Konkan Railway on a pay scale of Rs 9,000-Rs 10,000 for a period of five years.

But without his permission, Konkan Railway deducted Rs 4,000 from his salary contending that it was a re-employment under the Central Government.

"My salary was less than half of that of Konkan rail executives. How did the government expect me to function as a CEO of an important public sector with such a meager income?" the 77-year-old Sreedharan had told the High Court.

Even though the Centre appealed against Sreedharan but when the two-judge bench of Chief Justice AP Shah and Justice Manmohan warned the about imposing a heavy penalty, the government withdrew its plea.
