New Delhi: The winter session of Parliament has not witnessed even one day of smooth proceedings since the Volcker controversy resurfaced.
Disrupting the House for the fifth consecutive day, the Opposition went on an offensive and demanded Natwar Singh’s resignation.
As soon as the House assembled, the Opposition members accused the Government of trying to stifle its (Opposition’s) voice and denying the NDA leaders an opportunity to speak.
They also charged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of belittling the BJP-led Opposition by saying that he did not take Opposition charges on the Volcker issue seriously.
Shouting slogans like “Mafia Raj nahin chalega“(Mafia rule will not be allowed), the NDA demanded Natwar Singh’s resignation and also targetted Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
Following the heated exchange, Rajya Sabha Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat adjourned the House till Tuesday.
However, Shekhawat allowed BJP Deputy Leader Shushma Swaraj to speak on the subject.
Swaraj alleged that the ruling party is trying to sideline the “existence of the Opposition by denying the leader of the Opposition Jaswant Singh to speak after the Prime Minister made statment on the on Volcker issue on Friday.”
“It is regrettable that Parliamentary Affairs Minister lead the ruling members in this attack on oppostion and Prime Minister remained a silent spectator,” she said.
The Opposition also took exception to the whisking away of the controversial Aneil Matherani from the airport and the secret investigations being carried out by Enforcement Directorate.
They also alleged that Congress is “torturing” Aneil Mathrani.
The NDA members also objected to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Russia. The Lok Sabha has been adjourned till 1130 hrs (IST).
