BANGALORE: If everything goes well, in the coming days, one might not see the garbage collection vehicles on roads in Bangalore at all. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is planning to open dry waste collection centres across the city. The dry wastes will be collected at the door step of every household. That said, it will then be segregated and recycled. The Palike in association with ITC, a private company will collect the dry waste from markets, households, road, commercial complexes, apartments and other such places. However, at present, it is only restricted to dry waste. To begin with, the Palike started a dry waste centre in Shivajinagar. “We collected waste material like paper, bottles, metal pieces, carton boxes, thermocol and other waste from Russel market and surrounding areas. Later, it was segregated. The metal was given for re-cycling while paper waste was sent for re-rolling,” a senior official from the BBMP said.According to the official, by collecting dry waste, the Palike is also reducing cost of transport.“We have received many complaints about the BBMP garbage vehicles. The complaints are usually that the vehicles do not collect the garbage on time. Dry waste centres could be the solution to the problem. It will also reduce our financial burden to some extent,” the official added. The official further said that the Palike is planning to start at least 30 such centres in the next two months. There are at least 5,000 ragpickers in Bangalore who are self-employed and earn their livelihood.“We are also planning to integrate them into our dry waste collection centres,” the official added.
