Pet on the back: Finding solace, love
Pet on the back: Finding solace, love

“Whenever I go out, I carry my pet hamster with me. Even when I am travelling by bus, my pet is always there to keep me company. I put it in a basket and give it some food to eat,” says Farzana, a Bangalore-based business analyst. As the world is shrinking, more and more people are finding solace in animals than in humans.

While travelling to a new place, people now prefer to carry their pets along so that they don’t feel lonely and have an obedient companion by their side always. While for some, it is sheer pleasure, some fall victims to their circumstances and are forced to carry their pets when they move permanently to a new city.

For Anu Ganpathy, HR professional who moved from the US to Bangalore 11 years ago, it was a difficult decision. “I wanted to bring my 7-year-old Cocker Spaniel Indy back with me to India. There was a whole lot of procedures to be followed including a letter from a vet. After spending $700 and completing a whole lot of formalities, we were finally able to get Indy aboard,” she says.

Often when people travel with their pets, they have to give sedatives to the animals. But it has an adverse effect on the pet’s health. Dr Sanjeev K, veterinary surgeon says, “Bangalore has become a hub for breeding of exotic breeds. The weather conditions here are perfect to breed animals. Mostly, the puppies are weaned of the mother’s milk just 10 days after their birth. They are then drugged and sent to different cities.”

Dr Sanjeev further adds that when these animals are sedated at such a young age it can have a very bad effect on their health as well as their nature. They can become snappy and ferocious.

“Some people who take their pets with them just for pleasure should avoid it as it can prove fatal for the animal. When they travel by air they get scared and sometimes start vomiting. There is also a big risk of them choking on their vomit and dying. So, till the time it is absolutely necessary, the pet should not be displaced from its home at any cost,” said Dr Sanjeev.
