New Delhi: The issue of playback singer K J Yesudas being invited to sing in the Gururvayoor Shri Krishna Temple in Kerala had been making the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

However, Devaswom Minister G Sudhakaran attempted to put an end to the controversy on Wednesday by asking Guruvayoor Devaswom officials to allow Yesudas to enter the temple.

"I have sent a fax to Devaswom officials requesting them to allow K J Yesudas get darshan," Sudhakaran said. The minister's request will be tabled at a meeting between the Devaswom Board and the chief priest.

The Nair Service Society (NSS), on the other hand, criticised Sudhakaran's letter and stated that any violation would hurt the sentiments of believers.

Yesudas is Christian and according to Guruvayoor temple traditions, non-Hindus are forbidden entry into the temple. In the past however, he has sung several Hindu devotional songs, including at temples.

The controversy is the second of its kind in the state. Last year, there was a widespread furore when Kannada actress Jayamala claimed she had entered the sanctum sanctorum of the Sabarimala temple.
