New Delhi: In a strongly worded statement, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh termed the killing of Border Roads Organisation driver M R Kutty by the Taliban in Afghanistan as a "cowardly and brutal" act.
He stated that the murder reflected the "cruel and inhuman character of the Taliban and the forces they represent."
Kutty was a driver with the Border Roads Organisation and was working on the Zaranj-Delaram road project in Afghanistan.
The Taliban abducted him on November 19.
"I condemn this cowardly and brutal murder of a brave Indian, who was working in the cause of peace and development far from his home and country," the Prime Minister said.
The Prime Minister has directed the External Affairs and Defence Ministries to extend all help and assistance to the bereaved family of Kutty.
"Our prayers are with Kutty?s family," he added.
The External Affairs Ministry on Wednesday confirmed that Kutty, a driver with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), had been killed.
In a statement released by the EAM, a Ministry spokesperson said, "The Taliban and its backers bear the responsibility for the consequences of this outrageous act. We earnestly hope that the perpetrators will be brought to justice swiftly."
