Jarno Trulli has developed the reputation as a qualifying specialist in his F1 career.

Pune: The introduction of Pirelli tyres has affected Formula One as far as qualifying and tyre stop strategy is concerned. In fact, Team Lotus driver Jarno Trulli feels qualifying has become relatively less important because of high tyre degradation. In an exclusive interview, the 36-year-old Italian, who gained a reputation as a qualifying specialist in his career of 13 years, talks about the impact of rule changes, his performance so far and his stint with Team Lotus.

How do you look at the 2011 season?

So far, it has been a bit difficult. I had some problem with the power-steering of the car. As a result, I could not get the car to perform the way I wanted. However, other than that, the car itself has been competitive. I am pretty satisfied with it.

How has the introduction of Pirelli tyres affected qualifying?

Today, qualifying has become relatively less important because of greater tyre degradation. The emphasis now seems to be on saving tyres for the race. However, the new rules are working very well. So there is a positive side to it.

What are your expectations for this weekend’s Spanish GP?

There are some big aerodynamics upgrades for the car. I am expecting a big step forward in terms of performance.

There is a debate about the use of DRS in Monaco…

I am happy with the use of DRS at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Do you think DRS promotes superficial racing?

There is a positive and negative side to it. However, as mentioned earlier, the new rules are working well.

How do you see your career path from Renault and Toyota to Team Lotus?

I am still enjoying my driving. It is a challenge for me.

What’s the best result that you are aiming for?

It’s difficult to say right now. However, I am hoping to score some points.

What's your reaction?
