After quite a long lull, the southwest monsoon has regained activity. The city recorded 1.7 cm rainfall on Friday.
Thanks to the low pressure that developed over the Bay of Bengal, the State recorded fairly widespread rainfall on Thursday night and Friday. According to India Meteorological Department, rainfall is expected till Sunday.
Thiruvananthapuram has been recording a deficient rainfall this southwest monsoon season. It is the second worst-hit district after Wayanad. While Wayanad shows a deficiency of 59 per cent, Thiruvananthapuram has recorded 55 per cent less than the normal rainfall. When the long period average of Thiruvananthapuram is 63.8 cm, it received only 28.8 cm so far.
Rain has brought much respite to the city, which is facing a water crisis owing to the alarming depletion of water level in Peppara Dam, the major reservoir supplying potable water to the city.
