In a shocking incident, a teenager was detained for allegedly sexually harassing a seven-year-old girl child on Sunday.
The girl child, who is studying in Class II in a local school in Malva near Kallukudi Village, a predominantly agricultural hamlet a little over 40 kilometres from here, was reportedly lured into the house by Murugan (name changed), a fruit vendor and the resident of the same area. Murugan offered fruits to the child and called her to his house, which was close to his shop and located a street away from the girl’s house, on the pretext of offering her more fruits. Believing his words, the child accompanied him to his house.
The police said that Murugan attempted to rape the child inside the house following which the child screamed out in pain and ran towards her house. On hearing the child’s cry, the mother ran out of her house.
The child told her mother about the incident. She rushed to the police station and lodged a complaint against Murugan. The police registered a case under IPC sections 376 (rape) and 511 (attempting to commit offences) and went in search of him. “Anticipating police action after committing the offence, the boy escaped after locking his house as his parents had gone out of town,” Inspector P Ilanchelian said.
However, considering the seriousness of the offence, the police went launched a manhunt in the area and found him hiding in the house of a neighbour located a few streets away, said the Inspector. Later, he was sent to a juvenile home. The girl child, meanwhile, was sent to the Tiruchy GH for medical examination and treatment. Her father was an agricultural labourer and her mother, a housewife.
Two years ago, a similar offence took place in Tiruchy when a construction worker attempted to rape a six-year-old girl and was arrested and sent to the central prison.
