CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Sunday gave a patient hearing to all District Collectors on the first day of the two-day Collectors and Police Officers’ Conference. She sat through the proceedings of the day-long meeting held at the Conference Hall of the Secretariat, except for the lunch break. The usual practice, going by precedence, was that only some Collectors and Superintendents of Police, selected randomly, would be allowed to present reports on their respective districts. The CM would only intervene if clarifications were necessary. On Sunday, however, Collectors and SPs of all 32 districts and Police Commissioners of all major cities were allowed to express their views. Seizing the opportunity, most of them, apart from placing the facts on the table, even made requests to the CM regarding infrastructural needs of their districts as well as the difficulties the administration was facing. An untiring CM took note of all the key points and promised that all their requirements would be met and asked them to provide a clean, corruption-free and efficient administration that delivered the goods to the people at the earliest.Among subjects discussed were law and order, internal security, road safety, status of land-grab cases, welfare of Sri Lankan Tamils refugees, attacks on fishermen, crimes against women and children, implementation of Prevention of Atrocities Against SC/ST Act and action taken on petitions received at CM’s Special Cell.
