SATTUR: Antony (40), a teacher in a Government school at Sattur, has been accused of sexually harassing students. Based on a complaint from S Dheivanai, secretary of All India Democratic Women’s Association of the Sattur Town unit, the police registered a case against Antony, who handles social science classes at the Sattur Municipality Middle School. They have decided to conduct an enquiry with the students.Dheivanai told Express that Antony for the last two months had allegedly been sexually abusing girl students and also made comments on their private parts. The problem came to light when a group of girls, who were not able to bear Antony’s gestures, narrated their woes to one of their schoolmates studying in ninth standard. When she told this to her mother and tuition teacher, they informed the victims’ parents about the teacher’s behaviour, said Dheivanai. When the parents gathered near the school to attack Antony on Thursday, councillor of ward 8 N Vasan pacified them assuring that he would take up the matter with the school authorities. But, he did not keep his assurance, claimed Dheivanai.Meanwhile, Dheivanai met the students in the school and assured them of safety. Teachers, who met Dheivanai, told her that they were aware of the sexual harassment faced by students at the hands of Antony, who was partially blind. As his activities have come to light, Antony had gone on leave to Chennai.Asra Garg, SP, Madurai, who holds additional charge of Virudhunagar district, said that they have decided to conduct an enquiry with the children before initiating further action.
