KURNOOL: The five-day Ugadi festivities, which began at Srisailam on Tuesday, were marred by the death of two devotees due to lack of proper drinking water and other facilities.Two devotees died of sunstroke and the  condition of two others is stated to be critical. The deceased have been identified as Mariappa (38) and Rajappa (50). Both of them belong to Raichur of Karnataka and were on their way to the Srisailam temple on foot. The other two who suffered sun stroke are Malappa and Sankaramma and they were admitted to Sunnipenta government hospital. It may be noted that most of the pilgrims who come to Srisailam for Ugadi are from Karnataka, Maharashtra. Several men, women and children walk hundreds of kilometres to the temple. Enraged over lack of proper drinking water and other facilities enroute to the temple, the devotees even manhandled the engineering department officials. They broke the water pipelines and quenched their thirst.Meanwhile, six more devotees were injured in a stampede at the Sri Brahmarambika  Mallikarjuna Swamy temple here in the wee hours of Tuesday. According to reports, the stampede took place at the rajagopuram, where thousands of pilgrims thronged in the wee hours. In the melee a metal detector at the rajagoparam was completely damaged. Later, police brought the situation under control.
