Mumbai: Singer Udit Narayan has sought time from the Bihar Women's Commission to appear before it in Patna in connection with a complaint filed by Ranjana Narayan, who claims to be the singer’s first wife.

Narayan did not appear before the Commission on Friday and sought more time as he had not received a copy of the complaint filed by Ranjana, his lawyer Majeed Memon said.

In her petition to the commission, Ranjana said she was Udit's first wife and had legally married the singer in 1984. She sought a direction to Udit to allow her to stay with him.

The singer has however sought more time as he had not perused the complaint.

"We shall prepare an appropriate reply to the complaint after we receive a copy," Memon said.

"Udit is married to Deepa only and Ranjana's claim that she was his first wife did not appear genuine," the lawyer said.

"She is perhaps being used as a tool to bring disrepute to him (Udit) in his

professional career or to extort money from him at the behest of certain interested people."

The lawyer also clarified that Udit's wife Deepa was lawfully married to the singer and she was not a Nepali citizen as reported by a section of the media.

Ranjana had created a furore in Patna on April 21 when she tried to gain entry to a hotel where Udit and Deepa were staying.
